Eva-Maria Houben - Works for Piano

A concert dedicated to contemporary German composer Eva Maria Houben. Pieces for solo piano and two pianos, together and independently.

"What’s about the sound of piano? The sound of the piano decays. It cannot be sustained. I let it loose time and again. It appears by disappearing; starting to disappear just after the attack. In disappearing it begins to live, to change. The piano: an instrument, that allows me to hear how many ways sound can disappear. There seems to be no end to disappearance. The sound of piano! I can hear, how listening becomes the awareness of fading sound."

Following the concert series for two pianos Musica Nova presented last season, the ensemble is introducing a concert dedicated to a selection of pieces for solo piano and two pianos by contemporary composer Eva Maria Houben. In addition to the personal observation and interpretation of Houben's unique scores, the pianists Shira Legman and Assad Shatil will suggest new connections between her works when they are put up against each other.

Eva Maria Houben is part of a collective of international composers "Wendelweiser," whose publishing house prints her works. Born in 1955, she specialises in the pipe organ, and music theory. She lectures at the Dortmund music school in Germany
